Renault designed the VBC-90 (Armored Fighting Vehicle) tank destroyer for foreign clients. This vehicle uses a large majority of the components of the VAB armored troop transport. The first prototype was released in 1979. The French Gendarmerie has acquired 28 copies in 1983. (VBC-90s)

The VBC-90 is armed with a gun of 90mm. The turret GIAT TS-90 used is identical to the turret of the Panhard ERC-90 F4 Sagaie tank destroyer.

Auxiliary armament consists of a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. Another 7.62mm anti-aircraft machine gun can be mounted as an option.

The engine is a turbocharged Renault MIDS 06.20.45 diesel, developing 220 hp. The VBC-90 is not amphibious.
